While I have been a musician most of my life, playing in bands primarily as a drummer and experimenting with recording along the way…this is my first solo album.
The experience of all that is entailed in this process has presented me with a monumental learning curve.
This project was two plus years in the making. Most of this time was admittedly spent figuring out how to accomplish what I was being prompted to create. I gained at least a modicum of the idea of process studying film scoring and participating in several music to picture challenges prior to beginning to write and record this album. It was a great precursor to multitrack understanding.
So I began…
First of all, how to get what I was hearing into a workable format. Then how to arrange the pieces specific to the accompanying lyrics and phrasing. I have been a lyricist for quite some time, but largely writing for other singers. So, not really having sung much at all since my days in choir early on, this presented me with the first real challenge in recording. Hearing myself sing. It remains a work in progress for me but I am beginning to relax into it, and really enjoy it.
Having had piano lessons “at gunpoint” at a young age, I am now extremely grateful for the exposure at a formative stage in my life. Most of what made it onto this recording having it’s origins on the piano.
The guitar however was something that I had only ever really just noodled around with, so this recording presented the opportunity to at least get familiar with the instrument at a rudimentary level. Hopefully developing enough ability to provide some appropriate dressing to the songs.
All in all, I am deeply grateful for this experience, and am excited to continue with more music.
Work on the next album has begun. This will be in an actual band format with most of the tunes being recorded prior to Covid and mothballed. These tunes will be remixed and freshened and targeted for a mid-summer 2025 release.
Thank you for your interest, and I truly hope there’s something among these tunes that moves you.
Stay tuned and please share and follow!
Peace, Nathan Quade
